How to start an at home yoga practice
When I first started practicing yoga, we didn’t live near any yoga studios so I automatically turned to practicing online. For the past 8 years my practice has been largely at home! In this blog post you will find how best to start an at home yoga practice.
Invest in a mat
You don’t need much equipment to start your at home practice, in fact you could even just use a towel or blanket. However investing in a mat is going to make your practice a lot more comfy and the grip on a mat is much better than a towel or blanket. Manduka Europe have some great mats, I like to use the GRP Adapt as it is thick so it supports my knees and is super comfy. As for props you can use a couple of thick sturdy books as blocks, a belt or dressing gown strap as a strap and some cushions as a bolster.
You don’t need much space
Some people may have designated areas in their house where they practice yoga which is fine but if you live in a small apartment like me then you just have to work with what you have. I tend to roll out my mat wherever there is a bit of space in the room! Make your room peaceful and quiet if you can, dimming or turning off the lights and putting on some relaxing music will help you settle into your space.
The best time of day
Yoga can be practiced at anytime in the day. It doesn’t have to be for long either for you to feel the benefits, even just 5 minutes in the day is enough! Find the best time in the day that suits you, to start creating a habit and a routine of it then try to pick around the same time each day.
Honour your body
Always check in with your body during your practice and honour your bodies boundaries, release gently and come out of the pose if you feel any pain. Remember that you can always modify poses and support your practice with props to help you feel more comfortable and create more space.
Where to find online classes
I currently have a free series of three classes for you to access at anytime. These classes range from 20 - 30 minutes and will give you options throughout to take it up or down a notch depending on your practice and how you’re feeling. Follow the link below to receive access!
